An earthquake measuring around 8 on the Richter Scale struck the Solomon Islands this morning. The quake struck the islands, situated off the North East coast of Australia, triggering a large tsunami that has devastated several villages. It is thought that at least ten people may have been killed, but it is feared that the death toll could rise. Quote: ""There wasn't any warning - the warning was the earth tremors," said Western Province's Premier Alex Lokopio. "It shook us very, very strongly and we were frightened, and all of a sudden the sea was rising up," he told Radio New Zealand. He said the water "moved toward the island and hit all the houses on the coastal area, and all of their property was washed away to the open sea." Ever since the Asian tsunami in December 2004, many people are afraid that such an incident could occur again. The Asian tsunami was triggered by the largest earthquake ever recorded, measuring around 9 on the Richter Scale and lasting for around 10 minutes. Jesus Christ states that an increase in earthquakes will be one sign that we are nearing the tribulation period, and the book of Revelation states that the biggest earthquake the world has ever seen is yet to come. With an increase in earthquakes predicted, it seems inevitable that we will also see an increase in tsunamis like today's, striking fear into the hearts of unbelieving men. Luke 21:25-27 Source BBC |
